Default rear uni on front tailshaft gone

Just wondering if anyone else out there has had this problem. Im on tour at the moment up at Katherine and the rear uni on the front shaft has given up !! Got told I would need to get the whole shaft replaced but the part was not in oz and it would take 4 to 6 weeks from Japan!! Then rang jeeparts who said they had a 'new' one for 1200 plus delivery. Still not happy so rang poly4x4 in melbourne who said they had asecond hand one for 590. When ringing a second time poly said it was a common fault that they fix regularly with a repair kit they haveto replace the rear of the front shaft for about 350 delivered. He said I was mad to replace the whole shaft as the front and the shaft itself are bulletproof. His thought was that the 'new'one from jeeparts was probably a reco one at that price as they are a parts recycler, not new parts. Any thoughts??

This happened to me too a while back but I wasnt out of town when it happened. The part is pretty cheap to buy on its own 'non genuine'. If I were you I would order the part online yourself and get it shipped express. Then take it to a mechanic and ask him to fit it for you. Give Wooders a call too, I think thats who I got mine thru. Its a pretty common problem. With a bit of luck they may have them in stock.

The CV end on the front driveshaft at the top (transfer end) is the same as a late model ford falcon one, which most shops seem to keep in stock. With a pair of side cutters and a split ring pliers you could change on the side of the road yourself (dont ask, i have done it)

There are many online suppliers but most are in the US which wont help your touring.

I changed mine today,
As valpacer said not hard to do, only issue I had was getting the C clip on as the new CV didn't slide on far enough.
I just ran a file around the edge where the CV butted up against and it fitted fine (the downside of buying off the internet)

New & Old

Number stamped on old CV, don't know if this will help ME66739AGJ 010B & GKN IND 2081630 0106 ZOB

"C" clip that holds the CV on
