Am in the position myself.

Have a KK petrol auto and are buying a float to carry Alpacas. The float is only 2200mm high so is a lot lower than a horse float.

Float weighs 850kg and loaded will be around 1300kg

Am very much looking forward to seeing how the vehicle performs in terms of fuel usage on highway towing.

I used it for the first 600 km I did last week pulling an off road trailer. I turned it off on the way back and got a 3L/100 km benefit and I drove home 10km/hr faster.

It's the opposite of what I expected. BUT I need to experiment more though as the trailer was slightly better aerodynamicly on way home.

Just back from a 5000k trip towing the alpaca float. It is not a small float and weighs in at 850kg. Float is approx. 3.5metres long and 2.1 metres wide. Return trip loaded with around an extra 300kilos.

Used the tow/haul almost all the time and mostly drove at 95-100kph. Seemed to work well with the cruise on most of the time and revs were around 2750 and 3000 when shifting down a gear for the hills. On the serious hills I cancelled the cruise to avoid revving the engine excessively.

Fuel usage was around 19.5-20litres per hundred ks. A lot! At times, fuel usage was up to 24 litres per hundred when ascending the range from Grafton to Glenn Inness.

That said, the Jeep performed without any issues.

Hi folks
As we know the tow/haul button keeps the gearbox in third and prevents the torque converter lock up from happening. This is why it gets thirsty.
After talking to many gearbox people its likely that third gear is a lot more sturdy for this reason and petrol is cheaper than gears
