Found an excellent explanation of the difference between D1S and D3S bulbs, short summary:

1. D1S has mercury in it, D3S does not.
2. D3S bulb requires less power to turn on.
2. D1S and D3S have the same base design (the "S" refers to the base "notching" configuration).
4. You CANNOT replace a D3S bulb with a D1S bulb! They will physically fit, but the bulb, ballast or both will be damaged when you turn it on. There is also a slight difference in electrical plug configuration between these two bulbs.

I can confirm the above post is correct. Pulled the hid out this afternoon and it’s a DS3 not a DS1 and it doesn’t fit

Sorry to hear that the D1S doesn't fit and for the attached photos. Those photos show a slightly different plug configuration between the D1S and D3S bulbs. I'm going to edit my post above to reflect what you've found.

No worries. Might as well list these on the for sale section, though I'm guessing nobody in the WK2 forum will want them!

Has anyone given any thought to colour signature when purchasing bulbs? To be honest I only just noticed it in all the product listings. Is it personal preference or is there one I should be going for?

Hey Taprod,

Sorry it didnt fit, glad you took one for the team and reported back though! My manual shows it as a D3S.

As for colour, im finding a couple different D3S bulbs with various colours, one is (Philips) 4300K, Narva(4150K) the other is 6000K. Ideally it would colour match with the stock LED for the day runners.. but i am unable to find information on that part.

Phillips all seem to be cheaper too, and I’m wondering why. I do know the bulb I pulled out of the jeep was OSRAM which is why I’ve gone for same.

And as you say, there is no colour coding in the manual either
