Default Headlight and Tail Light Modernization?

The WG is still a great looking car even though it is 20 years old. The things that keep it looking "boring" to me are the headlights and tail lights and I think they were designed by someone's Nanna. I know it's been looked at before but there doesn't seem to be a definite solution suitable to Australia to bring them up to date aesthetically.

Headlights;
The Halos look great but built for LHD. Some discussion on here re' changing the projection plates over but no resolution posted in the threads that I found. Also have not seen these are actually legal here anyway.

Tail Lights;
I don't like the look of the clear tail lights, they look like "drift" lights to me and not suitable. One thing I have seen on YouTube is where the tail lights were painted with VHT Nite-Shades which turned them into a darker tinted light and they looked pretty good (See link below). You can get that stuff here online I've seen.

Any further information appreciated. Thanks.

I played around with tail lights on a couple different cars a few years back. On one I got pulled over a few times for ‘licence checks’ and eventually one Police Officer told me he did it because my tail lights looked ‘unusual’. I changed back to original and have never been pulled over since. Except for driving through a yellow light 🤬

To the best of my knowledge the lights these folks sell are ADR compliant.

I’m happy to be corrected if wrong.

I've got a plan, some might not approve of it, of installing LED projectors, which come factory in 2018-onwards Toyotas and other Jap cars....

1. The pattern is OEM (d'uh)
2. They also offer high-beam
3. Installing them in place of the high-beam would mean keeping the factory low-beam as the law here mandates using the low-beam at all times. Factory low-beam = I can be under the radar around the city, where police is most likely to watch for illegal modifications
4. Keep the factory level adjustment to avoid glare if the car is loaded.

I HATE glare, so with that in mind, I will adjust and install them accordingly.
The projectors are ordered, reviews are excellent (on-par with RX350 HID projectors, which are the benchmark)

As for projectors LHD to RHD change:
I eventually did change the projector plates in my MX5 halogen projectors and they work perfectly. Same can be done on any HID projector to obtain a correct pattern for RHD. One could install MX5 projectors in the WJ headlights to keep the bulb tech as factory, from the outside the light looks awfully similar at night. They use 9006 bults too.

Legality...
Our police force is also ******** about modifications modifications, however, thinking that "out of sight is out of mind", some OEM-like modifications should keep you out of sight, ie halogen projectors, hid with low color temperature (4300k). Aftermarket headlights are too bling and scream "pull me over", in my opinion.

I also think that if you are stopped for another reason and the inspector is out to give you a hard time, the headlights will be a low hanging fruit.

I am not responsible if you add projectors and the police gives you a fine

Skipper, those lights look the same as those in the USA. Not sure if they somehow adapt them to be ADR compliant. But the price is exorbitant! They are far cheaper to buy direct but the shipping cost is insane. Out of interest I may message them to see if they are compliant and if so what they do to make them so. Will let you know.

Adrian, from what you are saying the changes to the lights are more functional and very little aesthetically? Is that correct? If you've got some images or links to show what's going on that would be great.

Yes, mine would be functional more than aesthetic. The projectors are in transit right now and I've got a headlight which was destined for the bin, to cut up and practice. Warming it up in the oven is easy, I practiced with the MX5 headlight.

Something like this: https://www.quadratecforum.com/forum...j-hid-retrofit
but with the projectors in the high-beam area.

Doug.
It'd be good if they answered their phone.

On a similar note, I saw somewhere that someone replaced their standard fog lights with LEDs. Looked pretty good. I essentially have zero need for fog lights so quite possibly mine will stay as they are or just disappear if the bumper ever gets trimmed or replaced.
