Default JK Oil Usage

My 7 YO petrol JK (200,000 kms) has just started burning oil, about a half litre every 1,000 kms. I was thinking it might be time to switch to a heavier oil. I have been using 5W-30 since new, even though the manual calls for 5W-20, but is it time to switch to something thicker, say 10W-40?

I would try 5w 40 first , especially in Canberra's winter where you have common
0 celsius start up temps, 10w 40 would be fine in summer, if that doesn't help
you could try an additive from an auto shop for reducing oil consumption.

What he said!

My '08 was using a lot from when I got it in 2010. Not as much as yours, but it always needed to be topped up once or twice between changes. No problems once I switched to Penrite 10w40, but that is in Sydney area temperatures.
