I've run a ctek250s for 6 years. Very simple to install. Mounted inside the subwoofer and fed from factoy wiring. Charges 3x 20Ah deep cycle batteries in the tub.
Happily runs a 50L Waeco and camp lights plus occasinal other bits.
Only draws from main battery when alternator is over 12.5v. No relays no extra cables front to rear, all hidden in wifes daily driver. Ctek has a solar input if needed. Draws less than 20amp, never blown the fuse, connected to rear 12v socket wiring. I thought I might need to upgrade wiring but all good so far.

Thanks all this is why I love this forum.

I think I like the idea of a battery box over left rear.

Is it simple enough to also run an inverter for laptops, or even a hair straightener for the mrs?

Inverter is simple, just connect it directly to the aux battery - one red lead, one black lead. Work out the power you need and buy one. Laptop is nothing - probably 70W (70/12.6 = 5.5amp) but the hair drier is probably a lot more - maybe 700W (700/12.6 = 55amp)... so you have something to think about there...women ha?! Whatever inverter you choose to go with, oversize it by about 25%. This will allow for voltage drop, start-up current etc. I'd also suggest a sine-wave inverter. A laptop and hair dryer with be fine with a square wave, but some appliances really hate the square wave and wont work.

Another option is under the front seats. I've got two 105 Ah Remco batteries stuffed under there.

I've just ordered all the parts for an aux battery, I live in the UK but ended up shipping over a Uneek 4x4 battery tub from Australia, it replaces the original jack storage area and seemed like the best option.
It's a very comprehensive kit and I am impressed with it and the fittings included.
From Simply Split Charge in the UK I then ordered a CTEK D250SA and Smartpass 120 Combo (they work together), Simply Split Charge went absolutely overboard with the cables and extra fittings they included - I was blown away, from conduit to fuse boxes to sticky pads, you name it, they included it for free. All the cabling is pre-terminated too, very impressed. Will enable me to start the JK CRD from the rear battery safely if the main battery is dead

My set up is dual batteries under the bonnet with a BCDC under the front passenger seat and a led light on the dash letting me know all is good (green or red).
