Chris - I've also noticed that the literature does not come out and say "LSD" - like Billsta says we can jack 'em up and spin a wheel and see what happens.

However I've stopped on the loose verges of gravel roads - on the "marbles" if you like - then to see what the thing will do, just flattened the throttle. The thing just grips - and so much better than I was expecting. If the diffs were open I would have thought we'd have the drive wheel in the rear and the drive wheel in the front spraying marbels everywhere. The level of grip achieved suggests to me that the front and rear diffs must each be some sort of a slipper - and not open.

As far as the quadradrive is concerned - isn't that a LOCKER type system and not to be confused with Limited Slip. I've been in to that jeep site to see their little video - better go back for another look.

David, though so far I haven't been caught out, I think I would seriously consider that quadradrive option next time around too.

locker? hmmm. personally i think (especially in the pre-2000 models) its more like a HD LSD that should work but tend not to work when i want it to. it might look like a locker similar to those detroit TruTrac/tracloc or what ever.. the thing i found is that it need several revolution of one wheel before the diff "locks up" and that is just way to late and loses momentum. and if it locks up in time, it sometime releases before i reach the next obsticle. i have videos if my QD equiped diff spining like an opened diff....

and the maintance is bizzare too, special oil, blown seals... on hind sight, i much prefer as LSD that i can tighened and be happy with it. but than again, the QD is good to have as well...

anyway. thats my finding. not to say you are wrong or anything, just letting out some steam.

Kel/Billsta

Uhmm.. can you just simply lift both rears and turn one by hand to see the LSD in action or not? I'm not sure you can...

I suspect that you would need to provide "drive" to the rear propshaft firstly (I'm probably wrong here) and secondly you would need a bit more speed and torque than you could apply by hand in order to engage the clutches.

Is this correct, or do you still reckon that you should be able to turn one wheel for a bit and actually see the other start to move (if held itself initially) as the clutches (or cones) engage?

Cheers
Chris

I was told if you have both wheels off the ground and a limited slip if you turn one wheel the other should turn the same direction. Without a LSD the other will turn backwards. I know my VW (no LSD) will turn one backwards when the other is turned forwards but never tried it on the XJ, which I know has a LSD.

Cheers

Thanks! I'll definitely try it over the next day or so....

Cheers
Chris

PS: Isn't LSD illegal these days?

the QD will turn in opposite direction for a few rounds, and then it will catch and turn teh same direction.
think LSD does similar things.

This is my understanding also Steve.

Low and behold I just jacked up the rear of the crd, put in 1st gear and when I spun one wheel forward the other rotated backwards!!
This suggests an "open" diff - maybe yours Chris will react diferently.

The quadratrac 2 claim is to send drive to front drive shaft when rear loses traction. I have read accounts in here of people having one front and one rear wheel off ground, and having no drive at all. That also suggests both front and rear diffs in Q'trac2 are open.

Q'drive claims to send drive from side to side and front to rear. Being electronically controlled though there may be some other means than conventional LSD for that to work.

So get to it Chris and jack 'er up m8
