Fluoro lighting - top down or cornered lighting?

Afternoon all,

I thought I'd get some assistance on this one. I am about to upgrade the lighting in our garage, which is a long rectanggular shape (1.5 car width). I get really frustrated with working in shadows, particular under the bonnet.

My initial thought was just to run 4 fluoros in a normal 2x2 layout, but then I thought about having fluoros in the corners of the wall/ceiling at a 45 degree angle. Has anyone done this? Would this be better at removing shadows?



Would four of these be better, or would I be better off in just the normal 4x top-down fluoros?

i just added 12x double and 2x single fluros to my double garage

still need a work light under the bonnet

your idea of using angled ones on the walls would be better than roof mounted facing down.

I've just read that for every 9m2 of floor space, it's suggested to have 6 1.2m bulbs for good lighting.

My garage is 8.1x3.5 which is 28m2 of floor space, which would be 18 bulbs. That does seem like a lot of lights!

I have 20 watt LED flood lights in my shed, its a 3 bay shed (triple garage) and one at each end of each bay. At 20 w each you could stick a heap in there and still be no where near the power draw of you twin fluoros (assuming twin 36w tubes). Light output and colour from them is fantastic.

This was a night time shot with 2 bays lit up, so 4 x 20w.

And is that enough for you to work on the cars or would you prefer more lighting? Wondering whether I should go 30w, or 50w in LED. You have me thinking

Run the lighting in the corners along the wall to ceiling interface. Does wonders for working on vehicles.

I looked for a better pic of my workshop's lighting, but this is the only one I could find where you can see some of the lights....above the 2nd window up on the wall is a twin strip flouro....these are mounted on both sides along the garage, in pairs left and right sides. Terrific spot for working, no shadows.

Always want more lightling! I figured though i would stick a couple more in if I needed them rather than going brighter as that would reduce the shadows even more. Still need an under bonnet light as is but I am more than happy with the result.
