I wouldn't be accepting that answer, and would be escalating it higher. It doesn't sound right for a known recall to be "your problem" even if they claim it has been fixed.
I'd be demanding that at the very least they inspect it at their cost to see if the recall was actually done, and not just "checked"

You can see clearly there has been no welding of reinforcement plates on my XJ in the images below...

It is a safety issue and it doesn't expire, Jeep still have to fix it. They were first inspected & if no cracks were there nothing was done at that time. If there were cracks the plates were welded on. My 96 model was inspected in 97 with nothing being done then but I had the plates welded in at Jeep's cost in 2008 when the rail had finally cracked. There were 2 recalls for the steering box. 1 in April 95 for the bolts http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/in.../itemId/955148 & 1 in April 97 for the cracking chassis rail http://www.recalls.gov.au/content/in.../itemId/955305

Steering box failure
Hi all, thought this sticky would be as good place as any to start. All three bolts in my 95 XJ Sport sheered off the other day leaving me stranded in a carpark. I had already done a VIN check with Jeep and apparently it had been "checked" in 1998 or so. Everything looks all original with no signs of welding so I have emailed pics to a dealer so they can "check" with Jeep Australia on whether they will fix it per recall. I wait, patiently...
If I get no joy from Jeep does anyone know or have a rough idea as to how much it costs to fix and where might be a good place in Adelaide? I thought I might get the GoJeep website plates (awsome site BTW and many thanks to it's creator) made up and get someone to weld them in for me (I can't weld).
Any help would be appreciated as I really want to keep driving my new Jeep.
Attached pics for info.
Cheers, Squire

Jeep still have to fix it. It's an ongoing recall. They were checked first & if no cracks nothing done at the time but they still crack down the track so jeep will still fix it.

After much too-ing and fro-ing (between the local dealer and Jeep Australia) the XJ was handed back to me "for gratis" mind you the repairs took 8 weeks from when I dropped it off as apparently it was the first ever recall repair of this model they had ever undertaken...
Thanks Jeep Australia (I was staring down the barrel of a $2K service bill).

Is this something to be expected on the majority of cherokees? Or is it just a roll of the dice, and hope not to get a dud cherokee??
