Ive got 4.56 in 3.8 Manual on 35s and it still sucks wish id gone 4.88 or 5.28the fuel milage is shithouse already so may as well get some performance. I rarely use 6th on free way 3000rpm in 5th at 110ish and in the torque curve grab 6th and it just dies in the arse 6th from about 125 onwards pulls like a train to 160.
Workout the sweet spot for the auto rpm wise and then work out gearset. My economy is similar weather labouring in 6th or revving in 5th. Plus its a slug when towing or in the hills. 1-2-3 are too tall in manual box. Apparently 3rd is 1:1 not 4th like most gearboxes.

An opinion here........ you can go cheap or professional on diff regear jobs.

I've lost count of the number of DIY / cheap diff jobs that have ended in tears down the track.... any fool can "chuck in" a gear set but there is experience and time required to set it up correctly. The "bloke who fitted my bull bar" IMHO is rarely the right choice for diff work.

Both of these cost..... and personally I'd rather know it was done properly.

Diffs break, but if its setup properly in the first place then you can eliminate poor workmanship.

Hi,

I mean this in a good way,

That really does not mean much tbh. You get a setup for the worst conditions that you probably will put yourself in, so it really is a personal choice and according to your driving styles.

For example, it does not make sense to go small, smooth highway/city tyres if you're doing 99% HWay / 01% Offroad, if that 01% offroad includes rock crawling, deep mud holes etc. You will be bogged down for sure.

If you only do fire trails, then highway tires are fine. For the moderate bit, All Terrains are good and for the harder stuff, muddies/rockies..

Some only go 33", go anywhere they point their Jeeps to but in my experience, you'd prolly need 37" to tackle some of the harder tracks out there due to it becoming more popular and carving 37" tyre ruts. Having said that, I'm sticking to my 35" as I enjoy the more moderate tracks and also being the wife's Jeep. For harder stuff, go the WJ, 37".

The ratios are a marketing ploy served to sell tyres.

Wouldn't tyres be a ploy to buy gears? I wouldn't buy them if i didnt have to but i do so i did.

Agree , you make a good point

My 20% off road would be moderate trails at best , I guess my concern is that if I got the wrong ratio , and 80% of my driving is on road , I be driving a jeep on the freeway revving at 3000 rpm for extended periods

A mate has a 3.6 35s and 5.13. Crawls nicely but at 2600 revs /100 kmh is a bit too high for me. He also has problems with gear changes to maintain 80kmh. He either does 70 or 90 kmh.

I'll settle for 4.56 considering that stock 3.73 is good enough but I just want a bit more get go.
