Default 2007 journalists 3.8L rpm won't exceed 2000 rpm

Hello, I am new to this site and this engine, have had this jeep going on 7 years with no problems. Recently vehicle overheated on my wife, she didn't let it go far, when temp started rising she noticed smell and saw gauge higher than normal and parked it and called me to come get her. I am wating for new radiator.
Anyway now this, code reads p0123 or tips high limit. Is also rough at idle but smoothes out at 1000 rpm, Installed new plugs, did compression test (good) vacuum test (good), going to do smoke test and leakdown test this weekend. I am thinking the upper intake gaskets may be idle problem but dont know about 2000 rpm thing. Olny time i have sern this was with a improperly adjusted choke on a naturally asperated (elderbrock) engine. Any help is most appreciated

2,000 rpm is probably a limp mode. Once the fault is cleared/fixed, it should go.

You should be able to clear the codes with an OBD2 adapter, (search ELM327 on eBay) and a phone app. (Say, Torque Lite.)

Should cost you <$10 for the ELM & the Lite version is free.

BTW, the 3.8 V6 will shut down before it takes damage from overheat, as I found out when my radiator failed in my '08.
