Suitability for Canning Stock Route.

G’day Team GC,

I was wondering if anyone on here has done the Canning Stock Route in a GC?

I’m doing the trip in 2020 with a JK, and we’re considering a GC joining us.

I’m concerned that there’s inadequate ground clearance for the amount of soft sand the car would be pushing through. Does anyone have any insight to offer?

Also, any photos of Grand Cherokees with simple 2” lifts and largest wheel and tyre combos that a 2” lift can manage, would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Mate,
I have a 2" OME lift and have BFG 275/55R20
I haven't done Canning, but have been all over Fraser and it ate it up, never needed 4 Low. Pulled others out of Nagala Rocks. Awinya Creek was easy enough too, lots of vehicles get stuck on the way back.

Thanks for the reply. Nice set up. Apart from the 2" lift, did you need to do anything else to accommodate the larger tyres? I'd be considering the diff gear ratios, if we thought it was required. What concerns me is the really loose stuff, where you end up stuck in tracks with a large mound between them.




Like in the above image. Do you reckon your car would be okay in that?

Just make sure you have a good snatch strap so the WK can pull you over the hard bits.

In my experience the WK2 is absolutely in its element in the sand.

I’ve not once had an issue in sand.

Yes I would tackle that no problem, I didnt do any other Mods etc for my Tyres, will most likely change to 18" rims eventually so I can have more rubber and also better for low air pressures. But other than that I havent been stuck yet (knock on Wood) Only ever used my winch to get others out not myself. You will need recovery points added to the WK2, Uneek do a really nice set and easy to install.

The GC can come with standard steel springs or air suspension. I have air suspension and rear elsd, no problems in soft sand. Good thing about independent suspension is no diff housing getting dragged.

You can fit a fair bit of protection under the GC. The most important thing is to get rid of the sump belly pan made of out felt covered plastic, I like the chief stuff.

Go to 275/65R18 tyres (32 inch) with a strong side wall, I've been using Coopers STMaxx and they are good in sand and have bullet proof sidewalls.

This gives me 290mm of clearance in highest air suspension setting. I have dragged my belly across coffee rock and erosion berms quite a bit, no damage, rock sliders are a good idea too. Oh and that air dam gets hit on approach, definitely worth getting a lower front guard in there, as above or a bullbar. I've ripped mine off a couple times.
