Default Rear ABS Issues

Hi all, thanks for adding me to the forum!

I have bought a 2005 WJ/WG Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD and having ABS light issues. I have done the following:
- took out and cleaned all 4 sensors and all were relatively clean
- disconnected battery, let it sit for about an hour, then reconnected
- reset codes
- replaced rear right sensor with secondhand off a 4.7 as the original had a chunk out of the flat side
- checked codes and have error codes for Right Rear and Left Rear sensor (light comes on after going faster 30km/h)
- handbreak light also comes on (this only started happening after I took out all 4 sensors to clean)
- brake fluid level is fine
- fuses are fine

My next thoughts are to replace the ABS module. Does it matter if the module comes out of a 4.0, 4.7, or 2.7?

Probably unrelated, but the Jeep is also not changing out of 1st gear and the engine check light comes on (frustratingly it shows no codes).

Any other advice would be appreciated. Cheers!

You need to interrogate he ABS module with a scan tool to find out why it is unhappy rather than use the scatter gun of parts. Also the CRD needs specific software interface to scan successfully.

^^^^^^^

Wise words indeed. I've gone down the path of trying to replace half the car in a bid to solve a problem. You might as well toss darts at a board, blind folded at 100 metres. You will have better chance of success.

If you haven't already, get the WJdiagpro software. It will have paid for itself before you've downloaded it.

I didn't have a scanner until yesterday which is why there were so many steps and replacement parts! Thank you for the advice though Classic Boy, much appreciated.

The scanner I bought from Supercheap was a Bosch OBD1110 and wasn't a cheapie. From it's functions it was able to read the ABS module separate from the ECU, and clear each module separately.
So far the replacement ABS sensors and a new module (in the mail before this post) has cost me under $40 so not breaking the bank just yet with replacement bits.

I came across WJDiagpro software but I only have Apple computers I'll see what I can borrow though.

Cheers

The WG CDR is not OBD-11 compliant. Regular scan tools will not work.

If you don't have any Android devices, go buy the cheapest phone you can find and install WJ Diag on it. You also need to be careful which BlueTooth adaptor you use. Read the WJ Diag author's web page carefully and follow the advice about adaptors. Some people get lucky with the eBay cheapies. Some do not.

I managed to get my hands on an android advice and have WJ Diag Pro working. It paired with the Bluetooth ELM device available from Jay Cars.

It is showing that both rear wheel speed sensors are faulty.

Refresher from my initial post: I have replaced the driver's side rear abs sensor with a sensor from a 4.7 Jeep as the original hand a chunk missing from it. The passenger's side rear sensor looked fine when I took it out to clean, and the connection of both sensors under the backseat are firm.
I have also since resoldered all the points in the ABS module.

Are the speed sensors the same across all models? Or am I to get a speed sensor from a CRD rather than a 4.0/4.7?

I would be surprised if the CRD WJ had a unique sensor.
