When you come to put it back together, use a new copper washer. Make sure you anneal it.
Most copper washers are stamped & not annealed so they are too hard to seal properly unless over tightened. If you have a gas stove, just heat it up nice & hot in the flame & then let it cool down nice & slowly. Give it a light rub with steal wool so its nice & clean.
This works on old copper washers as well. Needs to be done to injector copper washers as well.

Certainly will need to remove the bash plate whatever way you remove the plug...

and while on the subject when you change the fuel filters make sure you have the right size socket and hold it firmly on the nut head, being plastic they will easily round off........................ I happen to have a special tool to remove the filter when you bastardize the nut, its not pretty but it works, the filter cap will never be used again though............

Would a socket which works "on the flat" still have a chance? I have a Metrinch set that have got me out of a jam before.

Also, if the rounding off does not extend all the way to the flange of the bolt, it can help to apply a steady force on the socket to hold it all the way on. Someone assisting, perhaps with a timber lever, or by using just enough upwards force with a jack, could be the ticket.

If these are not options, the underbody protection has to come off.

Cheers, Steve

For the corners to round off sounds like you used a less than perfect fit 12 point socket, get yourself a new or Good 6 point socket and hopefully it will hold on enough of the flat section of the plug to enable you to get it to turn.

Yep, that'll be my first try.

Anyone know where I can get a replacement sump plug apart from a dealer of course?
All the online ones I see are US and like $30 postage! No thanks.
