Default Winch installation

Has anybody fitted a winch to an ARB non-winch bar on an Xj? What was involved, how did it turn out, would you do anything different if you were doing it again?
Any other tips, suggestions for a tourer??

Are you thinking of installing one?

I've been procrastinating about doing this project for at least a year. I have an ARB non-winch bar. I did contact ARB about the oval hole in the front as it does look like it's for a winch. They said it's not, that it's just for ventilation. Which is interesting because when the bar was installed they put the number plate right over the top of it! And I've since learned that alloy bars just aren't strong enough to do it.
So i need to install a winch plate. Undecided as to whether I will mount it horizontally or vertically.
Up until recently I've had cooling issues so I've installed a transmission cooler behind the oval hole on the front of the bar which will need to be relocated. Not sure where to remount this yet.
One of the first upgrades I did was to install a 2" lift. In hindsight, because of the sports model already having a 1" lift and due to the weight of the winch and a roof rack I would probably upgrade this to 3" at the front and 4" on the rear to get a level, real 2" lift. But like everything, this needs to be investigated. Winch to be installed first.

I'm not fixing it, I'm improving it!

Yes I am thinking of installing one but not sure yet.

You have an alloy ARB bar? I've never seen one, mine doesn't have any slots in it at all like normal ARB non-winch bars which are steel....

I have an ARB winch bar. I am about to fit a winch. There doesn't seem to have much more "meat" behind it to take the winch. Maybe just some extra small bracketry. I can take some pics tomorrow for you.

Yes please, anything that you can supply would be great including the side brackets to see how they compare to the non winch bar...

Oops, I don't have an ARB bar. It's ECB. My bad...
But I still need to install my winch.

I did it a couple of years ago. Turned the end bits on the winch around & have it in behind the bar. The mount bolts hold the fairlead in place. Had to cut a hole for the gear leaver thing & for the cable slot .
