Default Lockers advice?

G'day all, so I've managed to get approval from my better half to get some lockers fitted to my 07 jku. I'm on a budget of around 1000, (around being more than likely less). What do you suggest would be best for me to get?

From what I have seen in the 6 months of owning a JK and regularly looking at stuff I can't afford, you wont get much for that price.

Lockrite are cheap, around $350, then add some new carrier bearings($80) and oil and fit it yourself. Not switchable though, can be a pain on the road or barely noticeable depending on setup. I would never use one in the front again, makes steering bloody hard(in a SWB Sierra, so no power steer).

Next up would be a TruTrack LSD, in the front or rear. Under $650 if you shop around($620 shipped on ebay or $590 from VPW). Then add any bearings/oil you need, plus labor if you can't do it yourself. It's not a locker, but should help a lot.

Most air/electric lockers start at $1300ish.

Also, depending on what ratio you have this may work for you.

Depends on what your planning to do, with the traction control already fitted you don't really need lockers. Just drive it accordingly and it will go almost anywhere lockers will.
And yes I've had an '07 diesel wrangler and now an '14 petrol. "07 didn't have lockers, '14 does. All my earlier jeeps have had twin air lockers fitted, not cheap.

Spend your money on a winch and forget about lockers. I have been off-roading for over 15 years with 3 different rigs not one of them had lockers. From my way of thinking all they do is give you a false sense of security. Learn to drive with out them. It's all about line, tyre pressure and throttle control.

As far as I know my 07 3.8l petrol 6 speed manual doesn't have traction control? I could be wrong though.

You have selec track which includes ESC and EBLD. ESC only functions in 2 and 4H. Your EBLD should work in 4H and 4L at lower speeds.

Your not going to find a new locker for 1k so maybe spend some more time getting to know the ins and outs of your wrangler, and play with tyre pressures.

I have only used my lockers in anger twice both times i was bottomed out in significant mud pits in the NT and got through but I'm not convinced they were absolutely necessary.

Don't get me wrong they are awesome and make certain situations far easier but I would think you'd be at 3 and half grand to get locked up front and rear and your not going to recoup that when you go to sell.

I hate winching but if your looking for an insurance policy against getting stuck in the midfle of bum f@#$ Gippsland for who knows how long with an irate missus, it would make a lot more sense to me to get a winch than lockers.

Also if you have been driving in mud regularly in a vehicle your not certain with the history of it would be a good idea to check your diff oils pretty soon

Cheers mate, thanks for the information. I've got a winch on already and always drop tyre pressure if I go off road. Everyone had been telling me that lockers were a must have for what I've been doing. Looks like that's not the case after all.
