Default 1998 Wrangler or not?

Hey guys!
Like lots of people here, I don't have a jeep, am new here and really want a jeep for reasons I can't describe. I have done more trolling of the internet than Rumpelstiltskin himself looking at forums for common problems (thanks common repairs ) things to look out for and of course positive experiences.
I've found a 2005 Renegade that's a little out of my price range and out of Redbook's price range and just recently a 1998 Renegade that is much closer to my pocket.
I found the drive between the '05 and '98 really different. The '98 was sluggish, and felt cumbersome and big but the '05 felt powerful and manageable. Is there some difference that I missed between these, other than their age?
What I want to pick your awesome brains for is whether a 1998 renegade for $10,000 - mostly stock (head deck & bull bar) - will be a good investment for a 19yr old as a first car.

Cheers in advance!

05 and 98 have the same motor and are almost identical so not sure why one would be more powerful. I think you'd be best getting an older one and using the money saved to modify it. Whichever you get expect to be permanently broke because you never run out of things you want to mod.
