There's a few black cabs in London that might disagree about VM engines being shit

The OP hasn't said if buying new or secondhand, so until we know the budget, ????
Personally I prefer petrol. Diesel spare part prices scare me!!!

The VM might be fine in cool climates but not here. Every tractor pump vehicle etc with a VM fitted is problematic and generally doesn't last the distance.

DBOR doesn't recommend the diesel and says go for the 3.6, but does bills opinion hold any water on this forum?

He's owned all options so he can give an objective opinion never discredit hands on experience. I m happy with the 3.8 more ponies would be nice but off road it isn't an issue in the rubicon. I've always had diesels cruisers patrols hiluxes etc dull but reliable all got around 16L/100 3.8 JKUR is no different. No black oil changes far more spritely on road and I didn't buy the jeep as a tourer more a weekend warrior but it does the highway miles with ease even towing a heavy jayco eagle to Batemans bay and back to Adelaide via the snowy's and mt bulla I averaged 17.5L/100 2nd gear all the way to top of tom groggin I really can't complain. Did a border track trip with a mate I used 17L more over 800km of heavy sand and fire trails than his JKU crd. Both loaded to the roof with fridges tools beer etc just a comparison
