Default WK2 Tyre Profile: Opinions

Alrighty, with my newly purchased rig that I very much like I have been wondering what to do regarding new tyres for some upcoming adventures. At present my WK2 Overland has 265/50/20 Kumho rubber, they say all weather or some rubbish but look like a soft road going tyre.
Shooting the shit over a few drinks last night and my Toyota driving mates were raving on about how stupid the low profile tyres are. Now, I would tend to agree, I've had.a range of rigs, Hilux with 15" rims and 32's, the WJ had the stock Wrangler 17's with 32's that did make it wallow a bit more. But after reading a ton it seems that the low profile off-road rubber can actually be quite tough. I also saw a vid from drive.com where they took a stock Overland with the 20's across the Simmo, it did get a puncture somewhere, but hey, they are road tyres.
What's people's opinions and experiences here?
I don't want to go out and blow a heap of cash on new rims if I don't have to. There's some ok deals on some 20" off-road rubber.

20 inch diameter wheel/tyre combinations are rubbish offroad mainly for puncture resistance / comfort because you can't lower the pressures.

Simpson desert is pretty much an extended beach run, but still there's a difference between a fully supported media run with a brand new vehicle and the resources of the importer a sat call away and a trip in a 5 year old vehicle.

1. You don't need to spend a lot of cash, the sale of your 20s should more than cover the cost of some Grand Cherokee 18 inch rims + the tyres are cheaper in 18 inch

2. People over-estimate how often they will go off road, you're experienced so i'd suggest you have a good idea of where/when you will actually be headed off, if it's a once a year on basic tracks/beach and you really like the 20s then, i'd suggest it's all good.

See how they go first. I've not read a bad thing written about the 20" tyres on the GCs. I can't vouch for them first hand as the previous owner of my GC replaced them with 18" rims.

Have a look at Huntsman Products:

https://www.huntsmanproducts.com.au/...nd-tyres.html/

I bought my Comforser CF3000 M/Ts from there for my JK. I'd gladly buy another set to replace these bloody noisy Coopers AT's on my GC.

They may be a relatively unknown Chinese tyre but I was very impressed with them. Even the tyre place that fitted them for me remarked how good they were to balance.

Yeah, I'm considering going against the Toyota crowd and sticking with the 20's.
Some decent prices AT tyres in 285/50/20, giving ok sidewall clearance and apparently still works fine with quadralift.
I like the look of the rims and don't really wanna have the runaround of selling them and buying more etc. Easier to offload the tyres and put new ones on

As for the Chinese tyres,I had some on my Hilux that proved to be very good, 120 buck each muddies. The bloke at the tyre shop showed me the Cooper's and these, they were the same apart from the lettering

When I was looking to put muddies on the JK, I didn't want to pay a fortune for a tyre than may not suit what kind of driving I did which was mostly beach runs fishing and the occasional Watagans run as I live 10 minutes away.

I did a heap of research and found out about the Comforsers. They were about $180 a tyre for 265s so I took the plunge.

When I took them to my local tyre dealer, one guy there was bitching about cheap Chinese crap and mumbling away about them. I told him that I was paying for him to fit them, not for his opinion.

When I came to pick up the wheels, he apologised and said they were the best balanced MT he had fitted.

Having said all that, my Brother in Law had Comforser AT's on his Colorado and hated them, yet I'd quite happily but another set of MT's in a heart beat.

275/55R20 was the best size I found in 20 inch before I realised I was doing it wrong.

285/50/20 seems to have a little choice too.
What are you running now? I'm guessing 18's
