WK2 Failed Diesel engine
G'day crew,
I'm one of the unlucky ones who seems to have engine issues. Just done 170K and had it serviced every 10,000Ks with Penrite 5W-40 for the last 140,000ks.
Oil pressure light came on when stopped at the lights last Sunday, as soon as the revs went up even a little, the light went out. Pulled over and checked the oil level and it was sitting on the Max mark.
Limped her home, and pulled the oil filter out on Monday morning, and noticed a couple of metal flakes in the flutes. Wiped the bottom of the oil filter reservoir and my finger glistened with sparkle flakes.
I'm assuming the worst scenario, however looking at contacting Jeep Aus Care but not holding out much hope that they'll do anything.
Has anyone had any success with Fiat/Stellantis and "goodwill" when it comes to diesel engine failures?
Thanks guys

Not great news mate.
Main thing is to get it in writing ASAP.
Verbals, phone conversations, text messages are not recognised. In writing has proven contact. Ensure email/letter is date and time stamped...email will electronically do it....but a date in the email is irrefutable.
A call to HO can be made. State in the call that you are recording the call and clearly state your situation. Ask what action HO requests to enable compensation for the issue.
Not saying this will definitely guarantee remittance/assistance/acknowledgement (they already know...its a Global issue)....but...it will assist any legal action if that how the road turns.
GOOD LUCK

The cases where I've seen goodwill replacement (post-warranty period of course) have been when all services have been conducted by a dealer. Even then, seems to really be luck of the draw and how hard you're willing to push. Best of luck.

Cheers guys for your replies.
Contacted Jeep this morning via email and had a response within 4 hours I was impressed.
What I need to do is get the vehicle down to my local dealership for them to strip and assess the damage. Once they submit their report to Jeep Aus well let's just say we'll see what happens.
In any event, it looks like my only option is a new crate motor or second hand. If I have to go the secondhand route, I'll probably have to offload her pretty quickly as no history etc and these having the issues that they do I just wouldn't take the risk of hanging onto it, but I simply love driving it, its a brilliant car IMO.
No changeovers available as parts are too hard to come by and too expensive, so that also puts paid to my thought of rebuilding this one.
Will keep you posted but I think it's going to be a long drawn out process.
Cheers

In 2016 there was a world wide US govt mandated safety recall which forced FCA Jeep to advise aTSB to all Jeep dealers to imediately change oil viscosity from 5w30 to 5w40 because of main bearing failures.Plus a 5w40 sticker on the oil filler cap ,plus a software update for the auto to smooth out changes ,less crankshaft shock!
I know many Jeep dealers either ignored this or dont know to this day. Also many
oil company catalogues still not updated!Check any service invoices for
what viscosity has been used since 2016.Of course if earlier model wrong oil from the begining!
Google , Jeep Grand Cherokee eco diesel change of oil viscosity, the TSB recall should come up.Make Stellantis aware of this TSB !

Beetlejuice, sorry if I repeated info you already knew, however I know of two other
VM engine failures that happened over the last week. Both on the fb Jeep Grand Cherokee page!.It is very obvious that FCA didnt advise oil company retailers in Australia of that viscosity change .I contacted a couple as late as last year ,still promoting 5 w30. and to top it all off try and find the CJ4 spec that was reccommended by FCA for these motors.! To put it in simple terms these motors
for whatever reason are failing ,if the dealer finds main bearing failure etc I would hit Stellantis with all the info from here and the US on bearing failures in these motors!

Quick reply does seem to bode well I think, I suppose the dealer will want to invoice you first for the cost of pulling things apart though then if the claim is accepted you invoice Jeep............ Im still surprised that someone hasn't done the aftermarket rebuilds for these engines, other Jeep power plants have had some brilliant rebuilds available which are better than original.............
I can only hope your journey is a smooth one with a good outcome ............
I hope my variation on service intervals and oil grades has held off any nasties..
