CRD upgrade

On Saturday I started the upgrade process of my CRD no that it runs pretty stable again. I have plenty of parts from my V8 which I want to convert over.

I am starting with an axle swap which I started around same time last year. The axle came off my donor Jeep which was never off road and driven by an elderly gentleman before the timing change ripped.

I welded a truss in which I built myself (made plenty of mistakes along the way and I would certainly do it differently if I had to start over again) and I also built some C gussets out of a flat 6 mm plate I got from Bunnings.

They turned out pretty good and were fitting nicely, just my welding skills need to improve. I only had a rather cheap gasless welder and switched now to a better gas welder which makes much nicer beads than the gasless.

I also installed some axle sleeves to strengthen the tubes and I will have some outer axle seals so that no dirt or at least as little as possible will enter the tubes and start rusting.

Next will be the installation of my airlocker differential with slightly different gear ratio for the bigger tyres. Should be ready by next week an then all of the axle swap for the front should be ready. Still need to prepare the rear too since the axles I have at the moment have the stock gear ratio and no trussas of now.

Well that looks as though it is going to be very strong now. I guess you are planning on doing some fairly hard driving in the future?

If you are changing diff ratios, you will definitely need to get inside the TCU. Plenty of comments through various threads talking about the issues cause by a mismatch of wheel speed sensors, and transmission output shaft speed.

Definitely - you'll get errors by changing diff ratio if you don't attend to the TCU. There are two ways.
One is as per RTB's post.

The add on module suggested by JeanLuke would be easier. To be able to read/write to the TCU requires it to be opened up and an additional wire soldered on. Not sure how intrusive you want to be with the modules.

Gosh this transmission is really a sensitive little thing. But now that you mention it, I recall that I read about it. But I definitely want to install the new gear ring with the upgraded ratio. Will be just better for the bigger tyres.

I hope so. Currently looking for a potential truss for the rear axle. I think I have found one which also takes less effort than the one I have built for the front axle.
