A heavy molly EP grease is best. Like the stuff used in CV joints.
It sounds like the splines are worn.
Can you feel the slop when you move the to & frow ?
Some splines have a plastic coating & when that is gone you have a problem.
I have in the past done a McGyver repair (not on a KJ) by placing a few rows of centerpunch hits on each spline (all the way around) to widen the splines & remove the wear.
It works if done carefully.
Be careful if you try this & dont put the indentations too close the free end or you wont be able to get the spline back in.
You may need to use a plastic or rubber mallet to drive it right on.

McGyver was the ultimate Jeep diy legend.

When I wore a younger man’s clothes I owned a British sports car with wire wheels with centre knockoffs they to were spline drive and notorious for clunking due to spline wear. The fix was a grease that was like chewing gum a few dabs of that stuff fixed all the spline wear noise.
Maybe contact Castrol or shell they may know the name of it.

I think that particular grease was ‘sad and it’s sweet, and I knew it complete’ , and from memory I got from ‘Davy, who’s still in the Navy’.
