Default How to deal with dealers misdiagnosis?

Writing this to seek suggestions.
My Jeep GC ( 2013) didn't move when I stopped for fuel. It was towed to the dealer in Noosa QLD. Being a hobbyist I know about cars. I told the dealer that as the shift knob is really limp I suspect the gear shift cable is broken.

They said we will diagnose and it's 160$/hr. Three days later they said it is the temperature sensor in the transmission that is faulty. I was not happy with the diagnosis and expressed this. In response, I was told to take the car elsewhere if I want.

I requested them to please inspect the cable and the mech said I am not sure there is cable (2014 are electric mine is 2013). They came back and said the cable is fine.

I gave go-ahead to fix it. I was quoted 800$ part + 500$ labour + 240$ diagnosis.

One week later they say we were bringing the car in and the gear shift cable broke (how about that ).

Now they want me to pay for the cable and the labor + 240$ for what they misdiagnosed.

What is the right approach here?
1. Suck it up and pay the total bill of 800 including misdiagnosed?
2. Tell them you said the cable is fine so you broke it I don't have to pay (they won't like it)? and only pay for the diagnosis?
3. Something else?

You were lucky, normally they charge $200 hr and it’s 2hrs

I love number 2, say that and watch them squirm

I should imagine that cable breaking is rare so you could get the part from All Grand Cherokee in Melbourne and see if there is an automatic shop in town to fit it or do it yourself. Tilt tray may be required

Because of misdiagnosis see how you go refusing to pay for their incompetence

You can always test the temp sensor by setting gearbox temp in the evic

I'd be mentioning number 2 due to their stupidity and throwing in Consumer Affairs and the Ombudsman into the conversation, that would hopefully make them do it properly.

I would not be paying for the temp. sensor, they are clearly incompetent and don't even know their own product. I would go to pick it up, as soon as you have the keys in your hand then tell them you are only paying for the cable and don't pay a cent more. (Take cash.)
Besides $800 for a temp sensor? That is rediculous.

Contact FCA. Given the barrage of bad press the brand has had lately they might be hypersensitive to the risk of anyone else going public with complaints about shoddy dealerships. FCA might weigh in on your behalf and help the dealer see reason...

The issue you have is they may well say the temp sensor was faulty in addition to the cable.

They will say, yes we missed the cable issue, but in our opinion the sensor and cable needed doing so how are you out of pocket?

Did they give you back the old temp sensor? It might be able to be tested. If it’s ok, then you have a case.
