Default Going from HD brakes to Std

Hey all

I want to run something past fellow forum members.

I own a MY20 Nighteagle with HD brakes which limits me to minimum 18" rims.

All that is required to fit the Standard brake size is the OEM calliper bracket 68052371AB and OEM brake rotor 52124762AD at 330mm instead of what we have 350mm

This will allow the running of 17" rims and tyres opening up an extensive and cheaper range to choose from.

I've spent weeks researching and this will not effect the towing capacity of the v6 petrol wk2. The US have two different tow weights on V6 petrol Laredo 4x4 3,500 lbs (1,587 kg) and 6,200 lbs (2,812 kg) the only difference being between SD COOLING and HD COOLING, both use the same 330mm front brake setup.

I've looked at VSB14 and quote

1.1 MODIFICATIONS NOT REQUIRING CERTIFICATION
The following modifications may be performed without certification:
 Fitting a manufacturer’s optional braking system for the particular make/model.

As all I am doing is fitting a manufacturers optional brake package, I do not need to seek certification.

Next is Jeep Australia's own warranty.

B. Modifications that Will or May Void your FCAA Manufacturer’s
Warranty
Examples of modifications that will void your FCAA Manufacturer’s
Warranty include: disconnecting, tampering with, or altering the
odometer, unless your repairing dealer technician follows the legal
requirements for repairing or replacing odometers. Attaching any device
that disconnects the odometer will also void your FCAA Manufacturer’s
Warranty.
In the event that:
• Non-FCAA approved “lift kits” are fitted to the suspension of
your vehicle;
• Non-FCAA approved suspension, driveline, engine or steering
modifications are fitted to your vehicle; or
• Non-original specification tyre rims are fitted to your vehicle,

then the FCAA Manufacturer’s Warranty will not cover these
unauthorised after market modifications or components or part of the
vehicle that are damaged or need to be repaired as a direct or indirect
result of the fitment or operation of the unauthorised after market
modification. The FCAA Manufacturer’s Warranty will not otherwise be
voided.

Given that I am using genuine Jeep parts that is a genuine factory jeep option, I think I shouldn't fall foul of any laws, warranties or insurance.

Sorry for long thread.

Wanting most sidewall I can get without upping OEM diameter of tyre

In essence, I don’t see a problem as long as a factory standard 18” wheel was offered, so dropping 1” to 17” wheel should be ok.

The brakes I don’t see any issues, however, I would ask your local Jeep service manager if there are any warranty problems down sizing the brakes. If he / she says no worries then I would be happy with that.

All that being said, I wouldn’t do it.

I would imagine Jeep would say yes it would void warranty, just as a standard response.............. I once thought similar to get a better range of rubber but thought the expense and trouble didn't really warrant it, no savings to speak off really........... but I do look at some tyres and wish.

Personally I would leave it as it is,
The cost of the calliper bracket and OEM brake rotor will probably cost more than the cost of new tyres

Comes in at around $500 all OEM. With OEM bracket and aftermarket rotors it can be done for $300.

Just an idea I'm looking into as I'd like to run steel 17x8 pos 30 wheels with 265/65r17 which runs almost identical diameter to factory wheels but gains me 41mm of sidewall for a total of 173mm. It's about keeping all speeds and stresses on drivetrain same as factory. But being able to bag the tyres a fair bit more

I'm not an expert but I believe that you will be reducing the braking efficiency of your vehicle, I would wager $100 that in doing so you will run foul of the ADR'S & your insurer will void your insurance as well. My 2c worth....

I reckon the ABS profile would be different for rigs with the smaller brakes
