More digging in the WSM about the fuel pump, firstly you will have to be able to activate the pump via a scan tool, using the key will run the pump for 3 seconds which would be a big pain, secondly the pump flow is 201l/m at 58psi so I suppose removing filters and letting in flow, splurt into a bucket might be okay but messy otherwise remove the intake pipe to the filter housing, add some more pipe and run it to a container so you don't have fuel everywhere, would need a QR fitting on the extention hose to match the fuel line.

If Alfa doesn't have the facility to run pump then I wonder if you could make a jumper for the board to run pump with no engine... you still wouldn't get all the fuel out anyway....
For me to need to empty and clean the fuel tank would be pretty serious stuff like algae in it so it would be a pull it off job so I could get it properly cleaned out along with the rest of the lines to HP pump anyway.

It really can't be a big deal to remove the fuel tank /s. I had both fuel pumps replaced in the last Jeep as I thought maybe I had an issue with one of them when I ran out of fuel.
It didn't take the mechanic long at all to remove both tanks and replace the pumps...I had run the fuel level tight down at the time so would only have had about 20 litres in the tank though.

Need a hoist, drop tail shaft and unplug the bits wouldn't be a great idea with out a hoist and stand for tank though .............. I dropped a tank once with just the vehicle on jack stands and tank near empty, not a good idea at all was the biggest pain to remove, never again, its amazing how heavy a few litres of fuel are when your laying on your back trying to hold it.

As an update the Alfa OBD will run the fuel pump with engine stopped but only for 10 seconds at a time ........... nothing like sitting waiting in a Doctors carpark......
