Default brake light

Has anyone experimented with putting the high brake light/wind deflector thingy from the later model xj's (I think) on earlier model i.e. 97. Reason I ask is I have a rear wheel carrier and the brake light mounted on the tailgate (bottom of window) is obscured by the tyre. Not only is this annoying when the light reflects off the tyre at night but I'm not sure it's entirely legal.
