Hi, Need an ECU for a TJ 2003. Best place to get it replaced or to buy.
Thank you, Paul.

Best bet is eBay or a wreckers. Will need to be (preferably) same year and has to be same transmission.

This from a US forum - ECM's are going to be a problem for our TJ's going forward. Mine failed at about 100k miles and had to be rebuilt. A company out of Florida did a fine job of it for me. Talking with the tech down there, he explained that the components rarely go bad, but the solder on the surface mounts fails due to shock and vibration. It causes intermittent bad connections and makes the computers go stupid. Blows out ignition timing, fuel map and transmission shifting. I've got a manual 2.5, so it was just the timing and fuel that was going wankie on me. Already have a plan and parts list put together for when you can't get rebuilt ECM's any longer. New one's haven't been available for several years. There's directions available online to do your own repairs, but like has been mentioned, it's non-trivial between the potting and the soldering involved.

Unless desperate, cost is prohibitive. In my post above it was interesting to me that the experts are saying the PCM is usually ok, just the solder gets damaged from vibrations ect... I’d love to get an old PCM and pull it apart to look. Couldn’t be too difficult to repair them, surely.

Thanks for the replies. After trying the wreckers & Ebay with no luck I was told by an auto electrician that Repco had a repair service. So have taken it to them & it has been sent off to Melbourne for repair. You need to send the ECU with the key & key reader. It will cost about $850.

Paul.

Thanks for the update. Please let us know how it ends up as a few TJ owners may need this in the future. $850 a lot of money but car is no good without the ECU / PCM.
