TJ Blower Motor

Does anyone know what I should be looking for to replace blower fan motor in a 2005 TJ (RHD)? Old fan problem - only works on high ect...

I’ve ordered a new resistor but my research says the blower motor likely to be on way out as well.

I know enough that RHD different to LHD but seems limited in choices.

RHD fans are an exact mirror image of the early LHD fans. The housing, fan rotation and vane shape is all mirrored.

If it only works on high it is likely to be the blower motor resistor, and or the speed control switch. The fans in early models like mine draw 13A on full. on later models this may have been dropped to around 10A. See if you can get the current draw measured. If the draw isn't excessive there'd be no need to replace the motor. The RHD motors (VDO brand only) are available from rockauto but are US$200+ before shipping and taxes.

Hopefully it's just the resistor and wiring. When mine went bad the resistor and connector had melted together and I had to get the wiring pigtail to splice in too.

I pulled the resistor out and it was all rusted and half crumbled away. The wiring was still in excellent condition so no melting.

I’ll do a bit of looking on rockauto as well.

I expect the resistor will be the only issue. Before thinking of replacing the blower motor I'd definitely get the current draw tested. Knowing mine should draw around 13A, I was able to test it as my multi-meter can handle up to 20A for short periods. I believe the drop to 10A was to try and stop the melting of controls that was occuring in mid production TJs.

With my multi meter, where do I test the draw from?

On an 05 the power for the fan motor is through fuse 1 (40A) in the PDC. You can just measure across the terminals with the fuse pulled. The multimeter will have it's own high current fuse which will blow if the current is too high for the meter. For that reason, it's best to keep high current through the meter to the minimum you can. It should only take a second or two to see a stable reading. Either set the meter up so you can see it then set the fan on full and use the ignition switch to turn the fan on and off, or turn ignition and fan on and make the circuit using the probes on the fuse socket.

Blower motor sitting around 10amps so seems good there.

Replaced the resistor and everything is working how it should.

Great to get my aircon back !

The old resistor didn’t look too bad so not sure why it failed.
