Default 3.0 CRD Diesel smoke from engine bay

Hey guys i got a jeep 3.0 CRD diesel engine and its blowing smoke from the engine bay, when engine is either hot or cold.

I took the engine cover and a few bits off to find heaps of dark gunk (expected) in the "V" region of the motor.

The exhaust manifolds are on the outside of the engine and not in the "V" so thats ruled out.

My understanding is that the EGR valve is on the top of the motor so wont be that either.

ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS? will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

My guess is that if it was the turbo hot side smoke and black gunk would be more towards the firewall,

Was the intake loose or damaged at all before you pulled it? could be egr line feeding exhast back up when cool and pcvfeeding vapour up then geting hot when hot and leaking out of a loose intake or egr to intake connection. My bet is a turbo seal. Any different noise or lag in power from the turbo particularly up in the 3 to 4k rev range? If so turbo seal.

The intake was not loose at all, and has the black seal instead of the infamous orange.

With the intake off, starting the car i can see smoke coming from somewhere underneath the swirl motor.

The smoke comes when engine is both hot or cold, with the most amount of smoke coming when you start the car after a day or two.

Yeah I'm not super familiar with the 3.0 but if you hadnt had any other symptons no high freq turbo noise varation or slight drop in performance in high rev range or fault codes. I would be pulling the pcv inspecting and replacing it m installing an oil catch can and then pulling and cleaning or replacing the swirl motor and that area. Check the radiator and res to see if there is a film as well to be safe.

Is your engine loosing oil?
The engine oil cooler is under the swirl motor in the V of the CRD
Many seep due to OEM seals going hard

Mine is the OM642 in a Grand Cherokee and it's a mungrel of a job
Post number 20 in my thread

If not, the only other thing down there could be fuel.
Does it smell like diesel?

And another note, the smoke does not increase with revs, if anything they reduce when revving but then build up when idling

It does smell a bit like diesel, but i don't understand why would smoke be coming out of fuel lines or oil lines?!

The smokes not coming out of the lines the fuel or oil is and then burning on the hot valley or turbo underside. If it smells like diesel that's probably good news and you will need a new fuel line fitted. Not sure about the type of fuel pump fited but a lack of smoke at high revs would acount for the pressure drop in the line as the engine demands and is supplied the fuel therefore less pressure and leaks out the line into the valley causing the smoke when reved. Pressure test the fuel line.
