wow...well at least you got a result. I did this about a year ago and just called in, gave my vin and they stuffed around on their system for a while and gave me the code. Maybe things have changed since then, or else I lucked in on a laid back dealer. Didn't cost me a cent. And when you think about, I don't think it should?

I'm pretty sure that if you really want to argue the point getting codes from a database is actually considered part of their after sales service obligations and isn't really something they can charge for, if you wanted to make it a massive consumer law issue.

What dealer did it for free for you, maybe a better option is to support them and direct our money to them when purchase time comes.

It was a while ago, and there are only two Jeep dealers in Canberra from memory. I am pretty sure it was Gulson Motors. The few times I've had to deal with them they were very helpful...as they should be!

The other mob were taken over by a GM dealer and I am pretty sure it wasn't them - Gerald Slaven.

I'm a bit "meh" about it. It's a reasonable charge at $25, and they are providing a service specifically to me to earn it. Somebody (who is paid a wage) has to spend time looking it up for me.

My attitude would be very different if they were charging much more, though.

The problem with a clone is that it breaks the "two-key" method of training another key. I found my spare, and tested it against my main key. They are clones.

I can get a blank from Amazon USA for around $30 and get it cut locally for around $15. Add $25 for the PIN and I am still well ahead.

Following up...
I got the code from my local dealer and they did not charge me for it.
Honourable mention to Motorama Springwood.

Now the BIG question...
I have two keys, which I strongly suspect are clones of each other (since the two-key method does not work). The vehicle shows that three keys have been programmed to it. This means there are two keys "out there" for my car that I do not have. Keys can only be programmed to one SKIM. If I erase all keys from my SKIM, can I reprogram my existing keys back to the same SKIM, or must I get all new keys?

I cannot answer all your questions but I believe the key can only be programmed once only, whether it can be re connected if disconnected I don’t know.
