Information to a potential buyer

Im looking at purchasing a wk/2 GC Overland. I dont know a alot about them other than features and so forth from carsales - hence wanting an overlander.

I can only afford a 2011/12 model as 2013 seems to jump in price alot.

I have read all the horror stories re. jeeps and reliability. But this is only what Ive read.

What are your thoughts on this model - I know been owners I may get biased remarks but they are all welcome.

Im looking at the Diesel or the V8. I understand the diesel with get better economy...but is the v8 more reliable.?
What should I be looking for? What are common faults

Im wanting to look at 2. 2012 3.0 with 120kms, and a 2011 V8 with 110kms

The diesel probably uses half the fuel of the V8. There don't seem to be any common reliability issues with them.

Put an auxiliary tank in a diesel and you can drive Melbourne-Hervey Bay without stopping for fuel.

Going to the 8 speed transmission will cost you more. I am happy with the 5 speed, but the 8 speed is a great gearbox...

Yep, there are the odd failure here and there, heard of some transmission failures for the 5 speed when doing a lot of heavy towing. One of the most common failures I've heard is the aircon condensor leaking, but you can get aftermarket replacement which is a bit cheaper if that happens.

Oh, and the overland will have air suspension, which is a better ride in my opinion, but can have issues if there is a leak in an airhose or you get a burnt out compressor, etc.

We recently went through the same dilemma although not based on the hemi versus diesel (as the hemi has been dropped apart from 6.4 in SRT) but the pentastar versus V6 diesel.

We were struggling with the very discernable difference in price between the two not just based on RRP but many dealers would let a petrol V6 go for a few thousand less than RRP compared to nearly no discount on the diesel. Effectively the gap was nearly 10k however

We drove the petrol and diesel back to back from the same dealer one after the other and purchased the diesel and I tell you what we havent looked back. The power, smoothness, quietness and refinement of the engine and gearbox is up there with the europeans (we also have an Audi A6) The economy is great sitting around 9.8 city driving and mid 7's country trips.
We recently returned from a weekend trip to hervey bay towing an 8x5 caged trailer with bikes and camping gear loaded and returned mid 9's which is quite good.

While its not all about economy as the servicing is more frequent and a tad more expensive, the diesel we believe was the better choice for a medium term up to 5 year type car for us.

My experience is via Wrangler not Cherokee, however I would not trust Jeep with anything. Suggest you find an off road specialist preferably who knows the WK.

Nor would I allow a dealer anywhere near the truck for servicing.

Jeeps are a fabulous 4wd, but Jeep servicing is something to despair.

100% agree.....they will f...up washing your car.
