Default CRD Oil cooler replacement

Hi people,
Recently my brother in law had to have his oil cooler replaced on his 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee CRD engine due to engine oil in the cooling system.
The car has done 180k.
I have the same car but only done 110k.
My question is, is there a certain mileage that it should be replaced or do you wait until it fails?
Cheers

Totally up to you...however...it is a fault that is 'relatively common'...ie: at some stage there is a possibilty it will fail

Not all fail but while it does happen its hit or miss but something that happens across all manner of CRD vehicles, I believe it could be from poor coolant quality especially if it has been topped up with water at servicing or just been in the system too long in years or distance, I'm suss of these 150,000km or more life spans given... I'm a dump at 100K max and use NUlon RED longlife.

This mob have the cooler or just gasket available so you don't have to buy the cooler and oil filter housing as you do from Jeep, the price is far more reasonable as well...

Had mine replaced 2 months ago at 108k. Knowing these coolers can be fickle I did it as a preventative measure, but when the job was being done a slight film of oil inside the coolant tank was already evident. So there is no benchmark mileage, they can start failing at any time - or some may never fail. My coolant has been changed a couple of times in the last 2-3 years (eg. thermo change) and now again, so the cooler was still on its way out despite these changes.

Some of the scum in the header tank can be from the leak detector/sealer goop Jeep add to things, it can look like oil scum.....

True Drover, but mine was oil film. No other scum present as the tank had not long since been thoroughly cleaned out. All GC did the job, very minor leakage also evident once he got down to the cooler itself.

Bugger, so close yet so far...

Mate, sounds like you went though the thick of it going from SE to NW. No simple routes but there are work-arounds that miss the densest metro madness, next time you need to traverse Melb forget the standard Nav routes, let me know and I'll give you some tips.
