Default Kyro, how's the head?

So how is the head gasket fix going? Are you having a win, did you do it yourself, how much did the top end kit cost for the '99?

Default Kyro, how's the head?

Hi there,
well were do i start F**King Diesel motors
we found out after removing the head that it was the welsh plugs that were leaking. but now that the head is off we sent it in to the head doctor to get checked and it came back with a note saying dump them (being 4 of them one for each cylinder)as the head has gone soft and the gaskets has pushed up into the head and also the heads are made of some thing that can't be machined so you have to buy new ones, and at $1800 each and the gasket set costs $500, $200 for the head to get checked& tested, $300 on labor,so to get back on the road a nice $8,200 or a new motor for $10,000.
i'm not real keen on paying for that so it has been sitting at the work shop in pieces waiting for me to do something with it. not sure what yet. rang jeep Australia, didn't want to know about it.
so now i have a jeep that i'm still paying off but does not go!!!!!

Mate, that's almost beyond belief!

Get onto DXJ - really, you need to talk to him. His diesel and other knowledge is very good, maybe he knows something, same car as you as well.

Maybe you can get the bits from the states? Hell that's a lot of money.

Holy COW  Those prices are un-believable.
I will never own a Diesel now as that is disgusting but not uncommon amough Diesels repairs.
You could also try Range Rover places as they ran the same Diesel in 1988 but not many of them about as only 400 or so sold here?
In the August 4WD monthly they talk about them but even there they say they can be re-built by a home mechanic for $8000 - $12000. :(

Hi,

yikes $1k8 per head? That un-machineable material must be gold or platinum

Did you try VM diesel here in Sydney for parts? I think I emailed you the phone numbers.

I know diesels are expensive but $10K is incredible. The other option is to get onto the european Jeep lists and ask some guys over there how much for parts from italy. Best if you can get someone from Italy to talk to VM direct, maybe even worth a phone call yourself. I heard 50% XJ sales in Italy are the 2.5 diesel.

Just an aside, how much do engines cost for repair these days. My next door neighbour just found his yota 2.2 petrol low on compression, was quoted $3K9 for reco. If this is what people are charging then maybe close to 10K for diesel is what it costs. Usually expect double price for lower volume higher precision diesel parts.

I guess the lesson is that we should all take out Jeep extended warranty. Unfortunatley too late for me.

Good Luck.
