Default Should we change our oil coolers

Folks, just saw the heartache with the oil cooler failure on an eco diesel on Facebook. The replacement oil cooler kits are generally sub $200 dollars Plus coolant etc and a DIY job if your up to it. Searched this and looks a tad common or am I over reacting here?

No real need for alarm, its just one of the many things on diesels that may go wrong, brand doesn't matter............... Those facebook pages generally make a lot of noise over common problems that occur to all engines, often by folk with no idea of maintenance other than the glove box book.

Default Oil Cooler Woos

My oil cooler failed at 40,000KM
My mechanic changed it over in my garage, not as simple as you may think.
leave it to the trade to do.
FCA would not come to the party on parts as it was not done by a dealer.
Delay on parts through dealership/FCA was up to 6 weeks.
Poly 4x4 in Melbourne had stock and was considerably cheaper.
You will need to change all coolant hoses and fluid bottle due to oil contamination
Good Luck

Was a problem on the 2.7 Merc as well at times, not to mention other vehicles, luck of draw but you replace with the same thing, other than shoddy build I also wondered if dodgy coolant and galvanic corrosion was part of the reason, so many dissimilar metals in these things joined together by the coolant which while supposed to stop this reaction often doesn't whether age, wrong type of poor mix......in the old rig I would dump the juice around the 60K mark....Bloody horrible job trying to clean the crud out and you never get it all out of the engine or radiator, always a tide mark in the tank.

Some more info on my previous post.
Vehicle is GC MY14 Summit eco desiel.
Motor is Italian, failed oil cooler Modine ex China.
Current Speedo reading is 63,800 kms (in 5 years),serviced every six months on a time rather than mileage basis.
The oil cooler had been leaking oil into the coolant, removal and test has shown an internal leak in the core from oil way to coolant way.
You cannot purchase the core alone, have to buy filter housing as well.
The core is branded MODINE. Mention this because a google search, shows an article suggesting number of faulty Modine Cores fitted to Ram Eco Diesel Trucks in 2014.
Although 5 years old and out of warranty the component is not fit for purpose, failing at 63.000 kms.
A genuine Replacement Oil cooler was purchased from Poly 4x4 in Huntingdale. They had it in stock and mentioned they fail regularly.
I could not locate one at any Jeep dealership and was quoted 5 weeks delivery both by City and Brighton Jeep
Replacement coolant and radiator hoses, coolant recovery bottle had also to be replaced due to oil contamination.
Labour provided by me was some 12 hours to pull down reassemble and flush the coolant 4 times to remove contaminant in the coolant system

Cost of parts alone total $1,777.91, not including coolant flush, replacement oil and clean up items.
