Default XJ Almost Written Off - Beware Insurance Grabs.

Just an odd thing as a result of a very minor scrape along the passengers side of my XJ, caused by a stray Commodore. Crease in Front Door and minor loss of paint/rubber moulds on bottom of doors and guards, plus the side step buggered. She is insured for $4,500 and the assessor said that with the panel beater (GIO's preferred) quote of $3,800 to repair, they were thinking of writing it off and blaming it in part on the cost of new side steps ($430). Everything works on the beast and she is definitely an acquired taste. I would hate to lose her. I found a new step on Ebay locally for $60, gave it to them for that price and she is now being repaired. He said the parts for XJs are costing a fortune so they are looking to write 'em off. They can sell the wreck for good $$$ and cut their losses apparently. Beware.

I've found that the owner is given the first option to buy the written off vehicle is such situations (this may have changed recently) and as long as no structural damage has resulted from the collision you can repair it yourself OR at the very least part it out yourself to make up any losses...

Why are you insured for market value and NOT agreed value? surely all the add-on bits & elbow grease warrant the extra coverage offered?

Body parts for our Xj's are expensive and sadly now they are old vehicles and not worth much. It is just a financail descison for an insurer
