One thing I will say about ultra low pressure in your fronts is that you lose steering and can get into all sorts of trouble when you're trying to manouver down a steep ledge and turn at the same time. We experienced this a little at Berridale in 2004.

Sure, his sidewall was flexed out, and he nearly lost a bead because of it, but I'm not sure that more pressure would have prevented him getting into the trouble he was in, in the first place? If anything he wouldn't have gotten as far as he did.

I could be wrong though It would have been interesting to try the same obstacle with a few different tyre pressures and see what difference it made.
I still think he slided a few inches extra because of that tho. Not saying high pressure would have been better but in between maybe. But i am no way a master at this.

**Slight hijack**

This is something I've been bouncing around in my head for a while now. The first time I went wheeling with the new beadlocks I had the 33" BFG MT pressures down to 5PSI, which bags out a hell of a lot. The grip was absolutely phenominal, however I spend a fair chunk of the day on my transfer case thanks to the low clearance.

Which got me thinking, What would be better to have: 33" tyres that have a huge tread and don't bag that much, or 35" tyres that have a less aggressive tread, but bag out heaps to help traction?

I figure a 4" lift with 34"/35" tyres would work, as I would bag them right down to the same size as a 33".

Thoughts?

Are you talking about tyre width? Because that's a different conversation again.

Generally, I'd guess a 35" tyre would be at least the same width, if not wider than the same tyre in a 33". Therefore the 35" would bag more than the 33" anyway?

Or are you saying that you have 33's at the moment, and they fit, but when you air down you feel you lose a bit of clearance. In which case you're thinking that having 35" tyres that are uber aired down will give you the same clearance as a road pressured 33, possibly still not scrub, and still give you the grip you're looking for out of an aired down tyre?

Am I missing what you're saying entirely?

Door number two.

I'm thinking about getting some 34" or 35" tyres that are notorious for bagging down (any suggestions?) so when aired down to 3-4psi they sit about the same height as a 33" with 15psi.

Possibly a good theory.

MTRs always struck me as a tyre that bagged really well. Not sure that they make a 34" one though.

Perhaps borrow a set of 35's from someone, let them down to 3-4PSI and see how they look?

One thing to consider though, is sidewall damage from running on a tyre that low. Will it shag the tyre out really quickly? Or Wooder's point about no rim protection with bugger all air pressure.

Also the tyre won't bag out at the top either so it will need to be re bumpstopped etc.
