Default Tubes in Tubeless tyres

Just looking for opinions on putting a tube in a tubeless tyre just to get you out of trouble.
Assume the side wall is damaged a lot and you could put a large tubeless patch over the inside of the tyre then run a tube to get home. or not?

There are patches for tractor tyres available. Rema Tiptop have them. You would need to drive slowly.
Such a situation would require it to be the second tyre failure on a trip & you only having 1 spare. You would also need bead breaking & tyre leavers. i have seen a tyre filled with grass to get out of trouble in a remote area when the tyre has failed. Probably an old sleeping bag would work. Not for highway use!!

It would come down to the size of the hole in the side wall and shape ect. I had a pretty new 31"mtz which i managed to put a stick or something through the side wall while on a camping/wheeling trip down near singleton and the tyre shop guy said it was to big to repair so i asked him if he could whack a tube in it and he did , i just made sure i ran it on the rear . I ran that tube on that tyre till it wore out never a single issue not even a puncture.

I carry a tyre repair kit everywhere I go. it's funny, but I always seem to be fixing other peoples tyres. if you have a hole in the sidewall & can't sleeve it from the inside & run a tube, a quick fix is to use a few rope plugs through the hole. they work & work well, but get it professionally repaired ASAP. damaged sidewalls can be vulcanized, but that is not cheap & will depend on the cost of a new tyre, quality etc.

It's surprising though that many (at least up here) tyre shops give you a strange look when asking to fix a side wall or a nail hole less than 15mm from the edge of the tread. Straight up answer is na that cant be fixed mate needs replacing.

I had a stick about as thick as your thumb through the sidewall of the then new Duratracs. Fortunately for the insurance I opted for it cost me $46 to replace with a brand new tyre!

If it hadn't been for the insurance I would have definately been looking at other options.

I used to carry a couple of tubes when working in the gulf country - and have used them in the past to fix tubless tyres with a biggish hole - I also used to carry some leather and a good quality contact adhesive - put a patch inside and out - works to get you outa the poo

Someone told me the tube causes excessive heat build up in the tyre. Don't know if its true but he got a new tyre sale out of it.
