1996 JEEP Grand Cherokee - looking for Mechanic
Well, Hello this is a well established little forum, and its exciting to be able to be a member, since we purchased our 1996 Grand Jeep Cherokee - Ltd 5/5/09
just in time for my 40th on the 9/5/09.
RAA gave us a reasonably clean bill of health. It has 160K on clock, and a bit of play in the steering. The pistons on the rear door are flat and wont hold up. Theres a bit of a leak in the exhaust somewhere near the manifold and seepage from the rear of the engine(not leaking to ground though!+) Compression variation is 18%.
Front and Rear training arm bushes show general wear and deterioration.
Right out C-V boot is leaking grease (again none seen on ground, just all over)
Front sway bar link bushes are worn and deteriorated.
Rear Tailgate struts are weak ineffective.
Oh and the Tinting on the windows is too dark, eg only 26%light transmittance.
Anyway, so far we have had it for nearly 4 weeks, and its been running well and getting the wifey up to Mt Barker and Back here to Paralowie very well, the above were marked as mainly minor and early attendance to recommended, with urgent only for exhaust.
The freeplay in the steering is a bit wierd to deal with, but obviously doable, and Parking this baby is a dream. We heard that adjusting it could cause its total failure, and that reconditioned was $800 or new $3000. So hoping it will hold up, but hopeful if it doesnt that it will be within that range.
All in all , feels great and a worthy investment of $5500.
From the feeling I get from this forum, a good buy with benefits.
I look forward to hearing about the Adelaide club and coming along perhaps on the next Flinders Ranges Club drive.!
warmest regards, and thanks in advance for any pointers.
James
p.s
Else, we are going with Brentons Workshop in North Adelaide. Who already service our friends White Jeep Cherokee, same model and year! Which has already had its steering replaced, and had the rear door pistons fixed.
(He doesnt normally do jeeps apparently...)
