My PCM failed about a month ago. I was told that if I can find a used one with the exact same part number, it should work. Problem is I couldn't find one and even Mopar aren't selling them any more.
The part number is a story in itself. It's on the label of the PCM and starts normally with P56041 then three numbers usually in large text off to the side, mine is an early 96 model and it was 167 I believe this indicates the software version. They usually drop the P so mine was 56041167 and the replacement Mopar unit is now R4886948. If I did find a Mopar replacement it would also need programming by a dealer. BTW most dealers aren't able to program these anymore.
I did try one from a 96 Cherokee (mine is a Grand Cherokee) and it started the engine but without any gauges and I had only 1st and reverse gears. At least enough to take it home from my nearby mechanic.
It was nearly off to the wrecker when I found
http://www.jeepautocomputers.com I emailed them with my woes reminding him this was an export model and he replied within minutes "how many do you need". I paid him USD $250.00 plus $100.00 core plus $80.00 delivery gave him the exact part number for my PCM and the VIN. On the following Tuesday I had the PCM and the car works fine including the immobiliser. Plug and play.
