Default Fitting a Rugged Ridge AmFib snorkel to a JL Rubicon diesel

Today's job was fitting a snorkel to SWMBO's Rubicon. A shout out to DBOR who managed to get it here much quicker than I was expecting as well.

The instructions are pretty good although they do only cater for US engines and there are a couple of small gotchas that I came across which I'll detail below.

The instructions say to remove the entire rubber inlet pipe from the airbox, this isn't necessary, just remove the airbox end.
There is also a mount for the sensor wire that is attached to the airbox that needs to be removed before you can pull the airbox.

In the background in that picture is a black electronics box that is also attached to the airbox with the 8mm nut behind the cable retainer. This needs to be removed as well.

You also need to cut a piece of the plastic bonnet seal so the ducting fits, this is the only thing you need to modify.

The piece removed

The snorkel base is located using the original screws but I found it a bit of a challenge to get them to cooperate. The trick seems to be to mount the two top ones and get the threads started and then line up the locating pins on the two side bolts and then you can start the side bolts.

The snorkel upright has a rubber buffer to take up the slack and hold it off the windscreen. It didn't come with a lock nut so I added one to stop it becoming loose.

The finished product, all up installation took me about 3 hours without rushing to much.

One thing I was wondering about was whether the bottom grille was sealed when the snorkel is fitted. The grille on the side is part of the snorkel mount and doesn't have any holes. The kit was supplied with the low mount kit as well which replaces the high mount bits.

Tote

This looks great, thanks for posting. I’m thinking of getting one of these for my petrol Rubicon.

Hi Tote, great review thanks. One question did you remove the ambient air intake from the air box that takes air in next to the radiator?

I’m not sure what that extra stock intake is for.

Yes, you have to remove the stock intake, that's where the snorkel feeds into. The second intake cover allows you to not run the snorkel up the windscreen should you desire to fold the windscreen down (or just not like the look of it).
