My HP pump was dying for ages (a few years ago). I was getting random stops with no error codes. Occasionally it would shake at idle like it was misfiring. It turned out to be one of the valve packs in the HP pump. It took me ages to find it. I tried a new valve pack, but ended up replacing the pump with a reconditioned one from Hi Tech Diesel in Adelaide.

(Take that as a recommendation. Over the years of WG'ing, I have purchased a set of injectors and a HP pump from them. Both transactions were positive experiences - although negative on the wallet.)

The other (and lower cost) solution is to check the vacuum and LP side o-rings. The vacuum ones won't leak fuel, but will randomly suck air. This presents as hard-to-start occasions and random stops. Mine were completely flattened - square in cross-section.
EDIT: I ultimately diagnosed it by wiggling the lines while idling. I found one would cause it to stall. Just watch the fingers and the belt - one connection is behind it.

Drive another 500 ks around home and it doesn't miss a beat.

Heading back to work today. Stop at the very same set of lights in Colac.Engine splutters a few times then stops. 5 or 6 start attempts and finally it fires up and away we go. Check for fault codes and there are none there. Drive for another hour and a bit and doesn't miss a beat.
The solution here is obvious - stay away from those lights at Colac.

No luck it seems with blaming the lights in Colac. Came back to work today. 4 blocks from home, she shutdown again. This time while driving.....

Started it back up, wiggles stuff and checked for leaks. No problems found.

Drove the next 3 and a half hours perfectly smooth with nothing even as much as a shudder. Planning on having WJDiag logging fuel data all the time now to see if I can catch it.

So, HP pump you say. Sounds pricey. Thanks for the recommendation on Hi Tech Diesel in Adelaide. Will contact them and see what I am up for.

I resealed my HPFP after it left me stranded because it was leaking so much that it wouldn't build enough pressure for the car to start. The kit I used is BOSCH F 01M 101 456 for about 25$. It's a DIY job if you are extremely clean with the process.

Re-seal won't fix a worn pump though.

Yeah, looking at the price of reco pumps. Whooahh, that's some money.

Might start the search for a second hand pump and see what my options are based on the condition of what I can find.

I'd be happy to rebuild myself if the base pump is in good shape. 30 bucks is more my price range. At least if I have a second pump I will be no worse off than now.

Yes this will only fix seal leaks. Can a HPFP wear through metal on metal contact? The pump on my car is from 2017 and looked pretty good internally.

Also, can a HPFP leak internally with no external leakage?
