I think it on the back there is a small box looking thing where the terminals are

Thanks all, I just smelled rather than saw smoke so sounds like it could be the alternator. Will try to drop the battery in another car to charge tomorrow and see if it runs for any length of time just on the battery.

I've emailed a couple of the jeep and 4x4 wreckers to check prices on a used alt.

just wanted to get it running again as I was going to get it roadworthied and sold, been sitting in the driveway for about a year now as I've got a work car.

next question, anyone know if the alternators are the same for a '96 tj and a '96 xj, the 4x4 wreckers on the coast have one out of a tj in stock

why not take yours out and take to a auto sparky and get it fixed? get some new brushes while you are there

You more likely can fix it by replacing the brushes . Brushes on Ebay for $6 . Just changed mine . Very easy . Just youtube it .

I off set my jumper lead aligator clamps 250mm.
So when they are hanging , they are a safe distance apart and can't arc together.
