Hi WH3.0,

Did the MANN oil filter fix your engine noise?

Righto fellas, I need your help!!!

I have a similar issue to WH3.0 where i have a knocking noise when cold (sounds like a timing chain to me) when the engine is warm and I park the car leaving the engine running I can hear a tapping/knocking/slapping noise coming from the front of the engine!! (inconsistent rhythm)

I have just changed the oil following the procedure (except I waited longer than 15mins to start) I used Penrite HPR 5 5W-40 & a ryco filter.

The noise started immediately following the oil change and always goes away when warm unless left idling and there is an inconsistent tapping/knocking /slapping noise that appears!!

Any ideas would be much appreciated on this issue!!

If it were me I'd start by changing the oil & filter again (maybe just filter first).
Make sure the oil meets MB 229.31 spec's.
If problem is still there I would be thinking timing chain tensioner?

My spare engine has an almighty chain rattle on initial start up that disappears almost straight away, My investigations (on the net) tell me the tensioner is oil pressure dependent and anything that interferes with the oil pressure can cause a timing chain rattle. A dodgy filter is not unheard of, I would start there.

You could also try a bit of AW10-antiwear. I have used it with good results in the past. (not in my jeep yet)

With that rattle on start up, do you have a rattle when applying throttle off idle that sounds similar to VVTi rattle? Been trying to figure out what it would be. I am not familair with a rattle on start up with mine, but I get a rattle when applying throttle off idle.

Curious as to how many kilometres are on the engine?

I am a big believer that vehicles should be fitted with an hour metre for the engine, and the oil changed on a per hourly basis like plant equipment is. There is a significant amount of time the engines are running at idle and thus the most contaminating conditions occur via the EGR (below 1,200 RPM and at cruise throttle position). In addition to that, the idle time is not accounted for in the mileage reading. In my previous vehicles (commonrail diesels) I disabled the EGR and my oil stayed clean for around 6,000rpm. In the WH, my oil is black by 2,000klms and thickens up considerably.

Certainly agree with you regarding the hour meter, I'm no diesel mechanic but I understand that too much idling is not good particularly on a cold engine as this can glaze up the cylinder walls ?

I use the following Cost Effective Maintenance products: FTC Decarbonizer a dose every couple of months, AW10 Antiwear added to the engine oil and CRD Fuel Enhancer periodically to keep the injectors clean.

I stick with either BP Ultimate Diesel or Caltex Vortex diesel and make sure I get it from the larger outlets with a high turnover.

In relation to your oil getting black quickly and thickening up I haven't had that experience. My 07 WH doesn't have a DPF and I have the GDE tune with EGR delete and 3" SS Murchison's exhaust. A couple of years ago I considered the oil I was using and asked why I wasn't using diesel specific oil.

If you have a look on the Cost Effective Maintenance site www.costeffective.com.au there is some very good information regarding black diesel engine oil and also a lot of other general information.

In relation to why I wasn't using specific diesel engine oil, I spoke with Brid, who owns the business, and he recommended I have a talk to Pro Lube who are a boutique oil manufacturer located in Brendale Qld. So I had a lengthy conversation to their top chemist and was advised that because my vehicle did not have a DPF the use of a diesel specific full synthetic engine oil was strongly recommended.

So on their recommendation I have been using their Euromac 10w 40 Synthetic for over 2 years now, it doesn't get black as after 2,000k or thicken. I do a lot of towing with my WH and I do believe the engine is being better protected with this oil...I still perform oil changes around 5,000k even though I was told I could change to longer oil drains.

This oil is designed specifically for Man and merc diesel engines.

No, on start up only. I don't know what oil is in the engine or when it was changed so I will do an oil & filter change before I remove from the vehicle & see if it makes a difference. Because it may sit for a while AW10 will be added as well.

I have used quite a few different oils in my grand & each has had different effects on engine noise. I found with Castrol that the engine was noisier all round but especially at start-up, Valvoline thinned out when really hot & oil light flashed on (I mean REALLY hot, towing up big hills in summer).

I always come back to Penrite Enviro or Nulon 5w-30 diesel.

Thanks for your replies guys!!

Clarky,
I will give the MANN filter a go!! Then try an oil change also if that doesn't fix it. The oil I used is MB 229.5 approved, I believe the MB229.51 is for the models with a DPF, my WH doesn't have a DPF. I am also currently using CEM's AW10 its awesome stuff I must say!!

Bloke,
My WH has 235,000k's on the clock and I have disabled the EGR about 15,000k's ago.

roscoea26,
Does the FTC Decarbonizer work well? I also use CEM's CRD fuel enhancer every fill up and I also used there FOC flush every service (except the last change as I ran out) I also only fill up at BP or Caltex outlets using their ultimate or vortex premium diesel!

Hopefully the new oil filter will sort out the noise as I don't think its a big end as a big end would never go away!! Please correct me if i a wrong!! It may be lowering the oil pressure due to restricting the flow past the filter? Hopefully....

Thanks again for your replies fellas!!
