Pull the plugs.
They should be grey brown around the centre.
If they are black and sticky, would assume it has diesel in it.

Gave some diesel to a guy trying to get back to a mine site, road was flooded, but he did not have enough fuel to get back. 50-50 diesel petrol mix in a petrol got him back. But ran like a dog and plugs all black and sticky.

And do a compression test while the plugs are out.

I concur with Turbo on the black smoke thing - better being black smoke rather than white as it should be a rich fuel problem, not a burning oil problem.

I would check your MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor as if this has died or the wire or vacuum line has come loose/broken it will run like a hairy goat and blow heaps of black smoke.

When I replaced the head gasket on my previous car (EF Farimont) I forgot to put the vacuum line back on it and it ran like yours sounds. At first I crapped myself and thought I had put the head back on with the timing out 180 degrees because it sounded like it was firing on 2 cylinders! Noises from the engine didn't sound too good either....

Have you disconnected the battery to reset the computer: I've had several cars that did wierd things come OK from doing this - you might get lucky?

If it happened after the vehicle was filled would suggest you drain the tank and put in some different fuel. We often take for granted that the fuel is ok.

Thanks to all you guys for providing your input.

I've purchased a compression gauge and need to spend a couple of hours on it during the week.
