Default Alternator Upgrades

Sounds like the bearings in my alternator are protesting about being submerged in mud. I vaguely remember a post about upgrading to a higher amperage Grand Cherokee alternator??? Can't seem to locate the information as to what's involved, which model Alternator etc.

I probably have a second hand Xj alternator lying around somewhere, but if its not to expensive to upgrade??

That most likely would have been my post, I swapped out my stock 90a unit and fitted a Zg 136a unit, for me it meant that the mounts needed to be changed as I have a 95 with the auto tensioner and the larger alternator won't fit this mount so I had to change over to the manual tensioner to allow it to be fitted.
As yours is a 96 it will already have the manual tensioner so it will be a straight bolt in fit....

Hey JJ, the pic is of the test data sheet that I received with my replacement 2 years ago - it shows what can come out of the ZG unit (Hwy cruise RPM is around the 2.2 mark). It gives an idea if what can be expected from a typical alternator.

Thanks guys, pulled the belt of today and most of the noise appears to be coming from the lower idler pulley, so I may hold off on the alternator for a bit, but when I do buy a newy it will be a Zg alternator

Seems a common thing. There is a Ford one that replaces the plastic pully and works out to about $35 cheaper. The steel pully is probably shot as well but with that one you can replace the bearing. I just did both of mine for under $50 all up.

Regards A

You wouldn't have a part number or something would you? How did you work out the ford one was the same?

Pulled both pulleys out just now and they are both steel and both look like the bearings press out. I will go to the bearing shop tomorrow and get a couple of newys.

I have decided to replace the alternator anyway so advice on where to buy a new Zg alternator would be greatly appreciated.
