Default Shift between 2H and 4H

Hi there.

I am still getting used to the KJ (2002 2.5 CRD Manual) and am experimenting with the 4WD.

I have changed from 2H to 4H which was ok, but did seem to be bit of a whine whilst driving.

Then I slowed down to about 20km and changed back to 2H, but it felt like it did disengage for a while and there was a but of a clunk.

Does this sound like a problem somewhere. Does the transfer case need a service perhaps ?

Any comments appreciated.

Thanks
Kim

Well do you know the last time the transfer case fluid was changed? Not sure which transfer case you have, so I looked it up here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeep_Liberty

As you can read the later KJs have fulltime 4wd (4H) using Select-Trac with unlocked centre diff so it can be driven on dry roads without binding. It appears to me that you have a COmmand Trac system and thus 4Hi cannot be used on dry road surfaces as the axles are locked through the centre diff - and binding will result. Take it onto a soft or loose surface, dirt, mud, sand, etc to use 4WD.

A 2002 CRD manual does NOT have full-time 4wd and should never be driven on tarmac or concrete in 4wd mode (except possibly for short distances in a dead straight line) or it will put excessive strain on the drive components.
