Default Temperature

G'Day all!

So, have had my Scan Guage up and running for a while now and have noticed some interesting data.

It seems that the Water Temp on the CRD fluctuates by a lot dependant on the driving you are doing (while the guage seems to remain pretty constant).

I seem to have a 'around town' water temp of about 73-74 degrees, highway temp of 89-92 degrees and, under load I have seen spikes of 110 degrees.

Now I am no Mechanic, but I would have thought that a highway temp would be a little lower than that (comparative with a low speed temp anyway due to the amount of air being pushed through the Radiator). And the 110 degrees (whilst the guage is still just under 1/2 way BTW) seems a little too close to boiling point for my liking.

Can others with a Scan Tool give a bit of feedback as to their temps, see if mine compare just for interest sake?

Thanks

hey, I've had my scangauge fitted to the JK for about a week now, and i usually see the temps around 73 deg, havent seen it higher than 82, but will keep an eye on it and let ya know. never seen it up even near 100 deg.

do you have bigass spotties that could be blocking some airflow to the radiator / intercooler?

certainly is a bit odd it being cooler round town compared to the highway, although the little crd is working pretty hard at 110km/h.

on a side note, what intake temperatures are you guys seeing? mine fluctuates a bit, but is usually around 80 deg.

110deg C is nowhere near boiling when the liquid is under pressure.

Constant temps is the key. Too much fluctuation and I'd take a good guess that you'd be increasing the potential for faults to develop in things like the head (cracks). I modified the thermostat in my old patrol so the engine would run at a higher temperature. Would run around (estimated) 90deg C constantly whereas with the standard 76dec C thermostat it the temp gauge would be all over the place and you could really hear the difference in the way the engine ran. With it hotter it would run smoother, less smoke, more power, quieter etc. The engine ran at a much more constant temperature regardless of weather conditions and operational load.

Won't be fooling around with the JK though...

Hey TassieMav,

My CRD with the Scan Gauge runs an indicated 73 - 76 deg around town. On a normal day under normal load on the freeway at 100 to 110kph it sits between 90 and 100 deg. However on a hot day with the air-cond running and under load it has also spiked to a max 111 deg (seen on the way to Melbourne on a 40 deg day with car trailer (empty) on the back).

The difference is that when mine gets to 105 - 111 deg the needle gets up around the 3/4 mark I just back off a little and it drops back to about the 100 deg mark which is dead on half of the factory gauge.

Cheers Phil

I had my temp gauge spike up to the 3/4 mark towing a trailer up a hill when it was about 34 degrees. the air cond also shut down. normally mine sits just under half. I have a pair of spotties on the front of mine. I removed them and with the trailer back on and the outside temp at 38 degrees i could not make the temp gauge move from half way no matter how hard i drove it or loaded up the engine. If you have spotties infront of the radiator try removing them and see if it makes any difference. On my last car the radiator picked up air from the grill and also under the front of the bull bar so having the spotties infront of the grill did not worry it. The JK basically only pulls air through the grill.
