Default Did I mess up? trans-gear oil in transfer case

Hi!

I just put Penrite Trans-gear 75w-90 into my transfer case, it does say on the bottle it's suitable for transfer cases.... But I've been reading bad things about GL5 and not using ATF.

I've got a 2001 TJ 4.0 Manual with 231J tcase.

I don't mind heading back to supercheap and grabbing some ATF, drain it and pop the ATF in.

Just wondering if I messed up? And If i did do I need to flush the tcase somehow?

Thanks!

Yep that is the wrong oil for transfer case you need ATF synthetic oil which is much lighter than the gear oil you purchased.

For any particular model year, Jeep just specified the same ATF as was used in the auto transmissions of that year.

That simplifies inventory, and means owners don't need two different types for the TC and auto transmission, thereby reducing the chances of an incorrect ATF being put into the auto box.

Since you have a manual you don't have that concern, so you can use any ATF you like in your transfer case. If you have another vehicle with an auto you could use whatever ATF that requires.

You will be OK, but the oil you added is too thick for the oil pump that is inside the transfer case. They are a pretty rock solid unit. If you read the forums, a lot of people use 5w-30 synthetic engine oil, as the pump can handle it. Theres just a bunch of planetary gears, chain and bearings/seals in there.
I would just drop the thick oil, add ATF and drive it a few times and then drop it again and swap out the ATF/Gear oil mix for nice fresh ATF.

All good to go!!

Cheers,
