Default Setting diff pinion pre-load

I have a leaking pinion seal on the front diff of my XJ and plan to remove the yoke and replace the seal. The manual shows/describes the use of an "inch pound" torque wrench in order to check the pre-load before disassembly, and then to set it during reassembly.

As I don't have the correct torque wrench for this job I was wondering if there were other options? If I have to buy a torque wrench, can anyone tell me what sort of measure I should expect (the local tool shop has one that is 0-600 inch pounds, but if it is a small measure then perhaps this is too big).

Cheers,

Adam

Changed my last week. Poly 4x4 told me to torque it up to 65foot pound. Make sure everything goes back in the same way it came out (although it didn't help mine as it's noisier than before).

IMHO if you don't have (and don't want to buy) and in/lb torque wrench then the next best way is to mark the yoke/pinion thread position before you loosen, count the number of turns - then when done do the reverse until the marks line up.

Gump, personally I'd drain the oil and check your wear pattern if it's noiser - that's not good....
