Default 545rfe tuning for offroad

After taking my overland off road a few times i would like to do some thing to the auto. the main 1 is the ability to lock it into 3rd gear while in low range climbing hills. on the weekend i went to howqua and climbing some of the hills there would cause the trans to shift back to second then up to 3rd again quickly causing excessive heat in the gearbox. anyone know of what to do or anything??
thanks chuckles

I assume you have turned overdrive off. If you can find the 3rd gear sweet spot then it should hold ok, the problem is that the TCU will be looking at engine vacuum or some load related factor and downshift when it is programmed to. There are shift kits available for the 545RFE (Like the ones from Transgo), there are also 545RFE line pressure boosters that may help hold the gear, and lastly ECU software upgrades that alter shift points (but I haven't heard of one for the Grand, but the same 545RFE in the KJ CRD does have this software upgrade available). Good luck.

I could certainly be wrong but I believe the CRD has a different transmission altogether, perhaps even the Mercedes 5speed with individual gear selection. The 545RFE is a Chrysler transmission used in a number of models and does not allow manual selection of 3rd.

Yeah , Ive had this problem with mine too ,it wont even hold in 2nd.The gear selector limits max gear to 2nd but wont stop it from changing down.I would like to be able to take full manual control like the XJ boys can with the AW4 trans.Unfortunately nobodys developed anything for the 45rfe or 545rfe trans. What we need is a electronics guru to make something up.
